Dr. Alfred R. Wallace O.M.
Sir,
More than a year ago I ventured to write to you for your autograph. In sending it you expressed a kindly wish for my success in my future writings. From you, sir, to me, a mere beginner, such words brought great encouragement & I was sincerely grateful. In a publishers interview I read that you find some relaxation in reading fiction, even "modern mediocrity" as one of its providers called it the other day. Therefore I beg to ask your acceptance of the enclosed volume — my second story — and with it my expressions of gratitude & great respect.
Yours very faithfully | Arthur Linecar [signature]
