Lord Wodehouse }

My Lord,3

Your Lordship’s letter of the 13th inst[ant]. to the Secretary of the Royal Geographical Society4 having conveyed the intimation that H[er]. M[ajesty]’s Government would bear the expense of my passage to the East in a Mail Packet, a reply was sent on the 16th inst[ant]. accepting the same, and requesting that the passage might be granted direct to Singapore as being the part I wish to reach.

I therefore venture again to address your Lordship (as the overland Mail to Singapore leaves next week) to know if Lord [2]5 Clarendon6 will kindly direct a passage to be granted me by that opportunity.

I have the honor [sic] to be | Your Lordships [sic] | obedient humble Servant | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]
