My dear Poulton
Many thanks for your kind appreciation in dedicating your new book to me. I feel quite sure that you will say nothing on the subject to which I shall object. But I do wish you to "draw it mild" in your dedication. I have therefore suggested some alterations in the wording[.] [2] I would also suggest putting "Natural Selection" instead of "Evolution", since I disclaim the latter title in my Preface.
After recovering from my illness in November, and just as I had begun work on my new book about Midsummer, I got severe inflammation of one eye, which kept me nearly two months unable to read or write & left an amount of general weakness and general upset [3] due to very drastic treatment by an occulist, that I am only now recovering from. But I hope now very shortly to commence work in earnest though I shall have to go slowly.
I congratulate you on the happy nature of your domestic troubles, and with kind remembrances to Mrs Poulton & yourself, as well to any of the young ladies who remember [4]1 me.
I am| Yours very sincerely| Alfred R. Wallace [signature]
