Waldron Edge, Duppas Hill, Croydon.

March 27th. 1880

Dear Mr. Meldola

Many thanks for your kind invitation, but I am confined to the house by an attack of bronchitis which I am trying to get rid of. I had arranged to go with the Geologists Association to Bournemouth today till Tuesday, but have been obliged to give it up. I wish you a pleasant day, but I see a storm is announced for Monday or Tuesday, and the Equinoctial gales are certainly due. I see [2] the Corporation have almost decided to put Temple Bar in Epping Forest! Are you not going to protest against it? To put Temple Bar anywhere but on the City Boundary, is an anomaly & a barbarism. There must be plenty of bye-streets in the City where it could be put on the boundary, & be in place without being any inconvenience.

Yours faithfully| Alfred R. Wallace [signature]

P.S. I believe the "Act" does not really allow them to put it up in the Forest!2

This is actually the verso of the second sheet of the letter.
