Pen-y-bryn, St Peter’s R[oa]d, Croydon.
August 8th. 1880
Dear Mr. Meldola
Thanks for giving me the opportunity of correcting what I said at Ilford. I have not been attending to that subject for some years, but I find that the carvings &c. belong to the Reindeer period considered to be between Paleolithic & Neolithic, — certainly more recent than the old Paleolithic gravels in which Sir Antonio says he got his carvings. The substance of my remark will therefore stand with but little alteration, which [2] I have sent to Mr Cole.
I am now rather busy, but fortunately have to go to London early this week, so I will make it Tuesday & have the pleasure of meeting you & your friend at 6 o’clock.
Yours very truly| Alfred R. Wallace [signature]
