Frith Hill, Godalming
July 25th. 1882
My dear Meldola
I wrote to Mrs. Burgess (Clay Hill, Lyndhurst) a week ago & have just received back the letter from P[ost] O[ffice] marked (Gone — no address)[.]
We have let our house for a month from August 8th. and wish to go to New Forest for a week or two weeks, — & then for the rest of the time to Swanage, Dorset, where I want to give Willie a treat in Fossils which are very rich there, & it is also a pretty country. I shall cut the B[ritish] A[ssociation] though (because!) I have just received an invitation from [2] Lord Mount-Temple (late Mr. Temple Cowper Mr. Cowper-Temple) of Broadlands (Lord Palmerston’s place I think it was). I much prefer the quiet of Swanage & shall decline of course.
I think it will be best for me to run down to Lyndhurst for a day this week or early next week & try & secure lodgings, unless you know anyone else I could apply to there.
If you are not otherwise engaged will you spend next Sunday with us — coming [3] Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning as you find most convenient. I shall be going up to town on the Monday morning by an early train.
Yours faithfully| Alfred R. Wallace [signature]
