Godalming,

Octr. 24th. 18871

My dear Meldola

I am not able to come to the Fungus foray, having builders at work here & being obliged to come up next Tuesday Nov[ember] 1st — as witness enclosed cards — which please give to any one interested. I will then accept your kind offer of a bed & hope I shall not put Mrs Meldola to any inconvenience. Am sorry you wasted an evening on Hampden, but I thought you would have more fun. In the [2] old times when I knew the Dialectical Soc[iet]y the practice was to question readers of papers during the time of reading, — not letting any unproved assertion, or false logic, pass but requiring reader to give authorities & explanation at once. I thought this would "rile" Hampden, & lead to some excellent fooling..

Yours very faithfully| Alfred R. Wallace [signature]
