My dear Meldola1

Seeing your name among the fellows of the Royal Astronomical Society, it occurs to me that you may be able to give me, or procure for me, some information about telescopes. I am thinking of buying a small Astronomical Telescope — small, but good. I have all my life been longing for a decent telescope but never could afford one. Now Violet2 is very enthusiastic about the stars, having been visiting Mrs. Fisher3 (Miss Buckley) who has a [2] telescope. The information I want is as to the Comparative merits of makers. I have the Catalogues of Cooke of York, Wray of Highgate, and Watson agent for Grubb. I have determined on a telescope with 3 ¼ in object glass, — but I want one with first-rate defining power.

Wray supplies one with finder, stand, steadying rods &c. for £.23 (or £.24 with a third eyepiece) Cooke’s "Educational Telescope" same size is £.25.15. (2 eyepieces)

I have heard that Wray has a high reputation. What I want [3] to know is whether his 3 ¼ inch would be likely to be as good as Cooke’s "Educational" 3 ¼ in.

No doubt if you ever attend the meetings of the Astronomical you will be able to get the information for me, — or you may know some Amateur Astronomer who uses a small telescope, who knows the various qualities, & would perhaps kindly test & choose one for me if he recommends Wray’s. If you can give me the address of any such [4] man, and a card to introduce me I shall be obliged.

I suppose you heard of Will’s4 accident to his eye. I am rather anxious about his now using his eyes too much, before the injury is got over. I have written to his doctor, to warn him, as young people do not realise the value of eyes, often, till too late.

Hoping you are quite well, & with kind remembrances to your wife5 & mother
