My dear Meldola
It has just occurred to me that you may possibly be able to relieve me of a great difficulty. My sister died about two years ago, & her husband, who was a photographer in a small business at West Brompton, has been sold up for rent, and is I fear in danger of absolute starvation or the workhouse. I feared it would be so as he is utterly unbusinesslike & depended wholly on my sister for all money matters. He is a good & experienced photographer — having been at it 40 years — & is fairly up in the [2] theory & in every kind of work. If such a thing as a photographer to a scientific man, or to any Institution where there is photographic work always going on, were required, I think he would suit, as he would be perfectly trustworthy, would do everything that was required of him, & would be satisfied with a sufficient salary to live on.
I do not want to trouble you in the least about this, but only, should any such [3] post be vacant within your knowledge to let me know. I would if necessary be surety for him if that was required.
You need not reply to this unless you hear of something, or can recommend me to anyone likely to require such a person.
Believe me| Yours very faithfully| Alfred R. Wallace [signature]
