My dear Meldola

As you are a member of the Roy[al] Astronomical Society will you be so good as to inform me whether I can purchase back numbers of the "Monthly Notices" & at what price. I want the no. [number] for Dec[ember] 1872 containing two charts of Proper Notions of Stars by R. A. Proctor. I also want the two Maps of Nebulae and Clusters in "Proctors Old and New Astronomy" completed by Ranyard — taken from the "Monthly Notices" Aug[ust] 1873; and these last, or both I want permission to reproduce, or have use of the blocks. Do you think [2] a person not a Member can have this permission, or will you recommend me.

Can you tell me also if Ranyard is still alive, & is he one of the Editors of "Knowledge".

I am writing a book on the subject discussed in my paper in this month’s "Fortnightly" which I am informed by the Agent of the New York Independent (for whom I wrote the article) he thinks will sell well as the subject is rather a taking one.

[3] I see the Fortnightly is advertised as a 2nd Ed[itio]n! I presume on account of my article which is No.1. — (not necessarily A.1)! I don’t think you will think much of it.

Yours very truly| Alfred R. Wallace [signature]
