July 5th. 1909

My dear Meldola1

Just a line, — as I see in "Nature" that you suggested the telegram to me from Cambridge. As it is stated that it was sent to me before the dinner, — & you & others may have wondered that I sent no reply, — I wish to explain, that it did not leave Cambridge till 1pm. the next day, that I received it at 3.pm [2] and that I immediately wired back my thanks &c. to the Vice-Chancellor.2

If necessary please explain this.

The same thing, but worse, occurred in America, at on[e] of their Celebrations last Spring. I forget which. I had a wire — I wrote back immediately addressed to the President of the Association at the place whence the message came. After a [3] months or so my letter was returned — "Address not known" — It was I think the "American Association"!!

Yours very truly| Alfred R. Wallace [signature]
