Dear Dr Wallace

Since my return home from Scarbro, I have carefully looked through all Spruce's1 papers & books &c. and cannot find any trace of the missing journals you think should be amongst them. I am truly sorry it is not forthcoming, and can only suppose Spruce may have lent it to some of his intimate friends and it has not been returned. — I have no recollection of ever seeing it and feel sure if it had been amongst his. I may My daughter has got written out the journal of his voyage from Tarapoto to Banos which I will gladly send you along with the original mss. in their[?] book.

[2] I have got also got together all the copies I have of Hookers journals &c. in fact all letters and other papers articles written by Spruce that are published in the various & scientific journals &c. of these All these are bound up in two vol. & marked on the back. Opuscula and I will gladly send you all these.

I have also a great many letters from his various correspondents & these I have got all carefully assorted together separated with the name of the correspondent on the packet. — I shall be glad to send you a list of his numerous correspondents, and also to send you any of the letters you would wish to see. [7 or 8 words illeg.]

I am very sorry the journal you think so essential is wanting [3] and feel sure it has never been in my possession or should have only been too glad to have sent it to you. I hope you keep well. I have recently had some unpleasant business matters with which have come upon me.

Yours very truly | M. B. S. [signature]
