Letter (WCP4735.5091)

[1]1

Broadstone, Wimborne

Jan[uary]y 21st 1908

Dear Mr Slater

I return you Spruce's2 "Bruche" letters, & S. Stevens' [1 illegible word] The letter does not give the details I want, but it shows that the insects sent were very good.

My son thinks, as do I, that in order to avoid any trouble to our families in case of either of our deaths in the next four years, it will be advisable to have [2] a statement in writing about the Spruce Mss.

Will you therefore sign & return me the enclosed form of letter, to which you agreed generally when I wrote to you before.

I sent of the Mss. & to Macmillan last week, and now shall have at least 6 months more work correcting [3] proofs, and arrang[in]g all details as to Maps — Illustrations [two illegible words] — &c. &c..

Yours very truly | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]

P.S.

The book will I think be in 2 vols. Copies will have to be sent to all the persons who have helped with materials, including Mr Teesdale, Mr. G. Stabler & yourself. If you wish to [4] have more than one copy you can have them. I think you had better now send me the block of the fine Photogravure portrait of Spruce for frontispieces.

"44" has been written on the top left of the letter, it may not have been written by the author.

2.

Spruce, Richard (1817-1893). English botanist.

The following looks to have been written by Mr Slater after the original letter. It appears to be a summary of his response. Written is:

"Jan[uary] 24 1908

Signed paper for my [illegible word] in Mss. for £20.0.0

Sent Neg[ative] of Photo

Asked for 3 copies of the book & written to say cannot find my [three illegible words] proceeding with Bentham address on Spruce's botanical worth
