There are plenty of healthy and pleasant places in Brazil but it is impossible to advise you as to going there or anywhere , without full particulars as to yourself & your ideas. Do you want merely to live there on your means, or do you intend to grow your own food, and earn your own living? Are you an experienced farmer or gardener, & can work at it? Have you any [2] trade at which to earn money?

There are a good many small German colonies in Brazil some of which do very well — but they are usually men with large families all of whom work very hard.

The chief reason I should not recommend Brazil is the possibility of Revolution, & hostility of the Brazilians unless you are in one of the German or English Colonies.

Vegetarianism is a disadvantage as vegetables are usually scarce [3] and very dear, unless you grow them all yourself.

For a pleasant life, I sh[oul]^d recommend the mountains of Jamaica — for a pleasant climate, glorious scenery, & land I think as cheap as anywhere — or —

British Guiana, where you can get land cheaper than in any other Trop[ical] country I know of — and if you took time to choose a good site on the banks of one of the great rivers where steamers run 2-3 times a week to the mines — you might in [4] [a] year or two get a good living by growing fruit & vegetables — fowls & eggs, — to passing steamers & boats, — & also live a pleasant life if you do not mind heat.
