Dear Sir Charles

I must apologise for not having written earlier to thank you for the new Edition of the "Anitquity"1 It forms a very handsome volume & the number & importance of the additions & alterations are such as to convince every body [sic] that great care & much labour has been bestowed upon it.

I was very glad to hear from Miss Buckley2 that notwithstanding your great bereavement3you [2] were able to continue your literary work.

The first edition, in 1863, was published in three parts, with the title The Geological Evidences of the Antiquity of Man. With Remarks on Theories of the Origin of Species by Variation.
Fisher (née Buckley), Arabella Burton (1840-1929). British writer, science educator and spiritualist. She married Thomas Fisher in 1884, so was single when this letter was written. From 1864 -1875 she was Lyle's secretary.
Lyell (née Horner), Mary Elizabeth (1808-1873). British geologist and conchologist and wife of Charles Lyell, died 24 April 1873.
Leidy, Joseph (1823-1891). American palaeontologist.
