The Dell, Grays, Essex,

June 2nd. 1872

Dear Sir Charles

I saw your nephew the other day & he informed me you had returned from the Continent. I therefore write to thank you for the 2nd. volume of the "Principles". I think you must be gratified by the universal commendation bestowed on it by the press and by all the scientific periodicals, and find in it some return for the immense care and labour you have [2] bestowed on its revision.

I hope your journey proved satisfactory, and that you have obtained some additional evidence as to the "Antiquity of Man1".

I remain| Yours very faithfully | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]

Sir Charles Lyell. Bart.

Lyell’s Geological Evidences of the Antiquity of Man was first published in three volumes in 1863. A much-revised fourth edition was published in 1873.
