Dear Mr. Jones

I have been away from home or sh[oul]d. have answered your letter before. I had intended to bring you a copy2 the last time I was in town but forgot it. I now send you by book post a copy of the pamphlet edition. It is withdrawn for a time owing to the objection of Mr. Sellar3 a son of the factor of the Duchess of Sutherland who objects to his father's name being mentioned. I did not know of his existence having only quoted from Mr. Mackenzie's4 pamphlet5 but I do not wish to hurt anyone's [2] feelings, & so, (though he has no legal standpoint the statements having been uncontradicted for 25 years), I have agreed to alter the passages & in the mean time I take out erase Mr. Sellar's name as in the copy I send you. Will you please do the same in the Land Lib[rary?]. copy and note if you like in the margin "by the Author's direction"— A new edition corrected will be sent in about a month.

Please do what you can to make the book known to any good radicals you know, as [3] the press appear to have made up their minds to ignore it. Copies were sent to every London paper but only two or three have yet noticed it.

I enclose a few orders for the Zool[ogical]. Gardens & am

Yours very faithfully | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]

J.E. Jones Esq.

Handwritten in pencil, not clearly in Wallace's hand.
Of Land Nationalisation, Wallace's 1882 work on the subject.
Thomas Sellar, whose father Patrick Sellar (1780 — 1851) had acted as factor to the Duke of Sutherland in 'clearing' the Scottish highland.
Scottish historian Alexander Mackenzie (1838 — 1898).
Mackenzi, Alexander; The History of the Highland Clearances, published in 1883 (presumably released in pamphlet prior, as we see here).
