10th February [189]82

Dear Sir

Most of the cover papers are made in Medium size 18 x 233 and cut to waste when used for a Crown4 book. They are suitable for a Demy5 book only.

We priced[?] the cover of paper we used in Imperial7 and each sheet will make 8 covers.6 As we have ordered the paper we [1 word illeg.] wish to push on with the printing, we are afraid it is too late to make an alteration without considerable trouble.

We have put in hand the Diagram for Chapter VIII of "The Wonderful Century"[.]7

Yours very truly | HW [signature in initials]

D[octo]r. Alfred R. Wallace.

The page is stamped "470". The letter bears no heading, but originates from ARW’s London publisher Swan Sonnenschein & Co., founded in 1878 by William Swan Sonnenschein (1855-1931).
Year inferred from context.
Medium paper size is 18" x 23" (460 mm x 580 mm).
An octavo book was made up of one or more full sheets of paper on which 16 pages of text were printed, which were then folded three times to produce eight leaves. The page size of a Crown octavo book is 5" x 7½" (126 mm x 190 mm).
The page size of a Demy octavo book is 5⅝" x 8¾" (142 mm x 221 mm). The 18" x 23" Medium sheet could be cut into 4 pieces of 9" x 11½" which is the approximate size of the cover of a Demy octavo book. There would be more wastage if used for a Crown octavo book with a cover size 7½" x 10" (page size 5" x 7½").
Imperial paper size is 22" x 30" (559 mm x 762 mm). This could be cut into 8 pieces of 7½" x 11" which is the approximate size of the cover of a Crown octavo book of 7½" x 10" (page size 5" x 7½").
