Alfred Russell Wallace to J. T. G.:
Godalming, England
December 24, 1887
I sent your paper to the Linnean Society, as requested by you,... and it will now, I suppose, be referred to the Publication Committee. I am very much afraid they will not publish it on account of its very great length.... I must say I do not understand your paper, and find much in it with which I wholly disagree, and I cannot but think you could put your main points in much fewer words. It seems to me now so elaborate and hard to understand, and so purely speculative, that few persons will take the trouble to find out what you really mean. Excuse my plainness, but my opinion might not be that of others,—still, I wish to let you know what may happen....
