16th Feb[ruary]. [1]900

D[octo]r. Alfred Russel Wallace

Dear Sir,

We quite approve of your alterations to the draft agreement,2 & enclose herein two fair copies, one signed by ourselves & stamped at [1 word illeg.] House,3 & the other for your signature, & return to us.

Clause 2(a) We have added "or elsewhere", as being more comprehensive than "the British Dominions". All sales at the regular made-price are subject to the full royalties, & many miscellaneous sales for the Colonies, America do go out at full price,4 & are called by us "regular" sales. 2(b) is intended to apply only to sales "at reduced prices"[.]

The letter bears no heading, valediction or signature, but originates from ARW’s London publisher Swan Sonnenschein & Co., founded in 1878 by William Swan Sonnenschein (1855-1931).
The agreement refers to publication of Wallace A. R. (1901). The Wonderful Century Reader London, Swan Sonnenschein & Co. (see WCP5058). This was an abridged version of the 4th Edition (February 1901) of The Wonderful Century; Its Successes and Its Failures, first published in 1898.
Not identified. Swan Sonnenschein’s London offices were in Paternoster Square, E.C.
The colonies were British overseas territories ruled or administered by the United Kingdom in the 19th and early 20th centuries, principally Canada, parts of Africa, the Indian subcontinent, Australia, New Zealand and parts of the Far East. Colonial editions of books were cheaper versions to be sold overseas.
