My dear old Friend,

Thank you so much for the gift of your new book1 & the dedication.

I am going on a visit today where I should not have time to read it. But as I am often wakeful at night, & have a good light behind my bed, I read last night Chap I & Chaps XIX & XX [2] as giving some of the fundamental opinions, also the Preface. I like it all; especially the last two chapters. Whether people agree with you or not, (& I do agree with the main part of it) I think it will be very beneficial in the present age of materialism & pessimism —

I myself feel it a tonic [3] for there is much to disquiet one in the present time, & I, who have always been a consistent optimist, felt my courage waver at times.

I shall write again when I have read the rest of the book. I do not know whether your busy brain is already planning another. But if not I am very glad your last word has been one of so much encouragement & hopefulness. [4]

I am attending some very interesting lectures on "the Relation of Soul & Body" by Mr. McDougal2 Wilde Reader on Mental Philosophy. He has been explaining as yet the mechanical theories of life & their inadequacy, & next term I expect him to expound something like your views in cautious language.

Much love to you all & very best Xmas & New Year wishes & with real thanks for your gift.

Yours affectionately | Arabella B. Fisher3 [signature]
