Parkstone, Dorset. England

August 15th. 1900

A. W. Anthony Esq.

Dear Sir

Many thanks for your kindness in pointing out the stupid error in my book, which both press-readers, reviewers, & friends had hitherto overlooked!

It arose from some vague idea that the easier feat of sailing round the Cape of Good Hope must have been before that of crossing the Atlantic. In the book itself I have put no dates, but merely stated that the former was 500 years ago & the latter 100 years later. In the "Reader",1 I have given [2] the date of the former correctly, & still put Columbus 100 years later! It is a great kindness to an author to point out such stupid oversights which otherwise are apt to get passed over indefinitely.

Believe me | Yours very truly | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]

Possibly the Wonderful Century Reader, for Alfred Russel Wallace's The Wonderful Century: Its Successes and Failures (1898).
