Charles Marseilles Esq.

Dear Sir

The author of the term "survival of the fittest" is Herbert Spencer, who I believe first used it in his Principles of Biology, Chap. XII. The works in which I have illustrated and developed the theory, are, Essays on Natural Selection (now out of print) and Island Life Tropical Nature in which the theory of colour in nature is set forth & a substitute for Darwin’s theory of sexual selection proposed. Also in Island Life & the Geographical Distribution of Animals I have further applied the theory to important groups of [2] phenomena.

The best work on the general doctrines of Evolution in undoubtedly Herbert Spencers First Principles. The best application of the doctrine & demonstration of its detailed action in nature,— Darwin’s Origin of Species'.

My book on Land Nationalization[sic] is a general sketch of the facts and principles of land tenure in the British Isles, as showing the necessity of a reform on the lines of Land Nationalisation.

Yours Faithfully | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]
