Dec[embe]r. 29th. 1883

My dear Sir

Many thanks for your interesting & suggestive poem on Ireland. I have read it through with much pleasure. I see you fully recognise the horrible iniquity of Agent’s rule and the cruel despotism it imposes on inhabitants of a country called "free"! For the time when it was written [word illeg. crossed out] your work was no doubt too advanced; now however the times have changed, [2] patchwork remedies have failed, & it is seen that in all our great cities, & in the Highlands, as well as in Ireland, the land-question is at the root of all the wretchedness & famine which are perennial in this wealthy land.

I enclose you the Rules & Programme of our "Land Nationalisation Society —" which I trust you will help with your name [3] and a small subscription.

With the Comp[liment]s. of the season to yourself and Mrs. Allingham1.
