The letter is written on the headed notepaper of the Batavian Society of Arts and Sciences (Bataviaasch Genootschap van Kunstten en Wetenschappen (Dutch); Société des Arts et des Sciences de Batavia (Fr.). founded in 1778 by naturalist Jacob Cornelis Matthieu Radermacher. Batavia was the name of the capital city of the Dutch East Indies, and corresponds to the present day city of Jakarta, Java, Indonesia.
