This Letter will be presented to you by Mr. Wallace, who is now investigating the Natural History of the Banks of the Amazon River, in the Interior of South America; And I am directed by Viscount Palmerston3 to recommend Mr. Wallace to your good offices4 and5 [2] assistance and to instruct you to endeavour to obtain for Mr Wallace, from the Brazilian Authorities such Protection & Letters as may enable him to execute the objict6 of his visit to Brazil. —
