To the Rt Hon[oura]ble Asquith MP.
Rt Hon[oura]ble,
You will have seen the announcement of the death of Dr. A. R. Wallace & you may recall that he had a civil list pension of £200 per year.
May I respectfully suggest that you would take steps to continue this allowance (or a substantial proportion of it) to his wife who is much younger
& is at present & may be for long, an invalid. It would I know be a great relief to the family. I do not know the proper way of bringing this before you but whatever conditions are necessary would be complied with.
I am Hon. Secty. of the Portrait Fund to present a portrait by [Mr] Seymour Lucas RA to the Royal Scty. & probably a copy to the National Collection. But I have not consulted the family about the subject of this letter feeling that if it came direct from yourself it would be most highly appreciated.
May I have the honour to remain | Yours faithfully | James Marchant [signature]
My address for some days will be
c/o Mrs. Wallace
Old Orchard, Broadstone, Dorset.
