Sir,
We beg respectfully to say, that the workman who shortened your Ribbon this morning has just told us that he mislaid the eye & as he was not able to find it in time he put on another one. We have searched everywhere for the lost article, but cannot find it. We can only think now that it is just possible the missing eye might be lodged in the jewel somehow? as it most inexplicable. We regret very much that we did not know of this before you had left. at [sic] any rate [2] we shall be very pleased to make good the mishap & have a new eye made to look the like the hook. Again expressing our regret.
We are sir, | Your Obed[ient] Ser[van]ts. | New & Co [signature]
Dr. Russell [sic] Wallace
