10th November, 1913.

Dear Sir,

I have to thank you for your letter for the 8th instant, with regard to Mrs. Wallace.

I fear that it is not possible to continue a pension on the Civil List to the widower of a pensioner; any grant made is a fresh pension which must come from the sum annually allotted, and must therefore be considered with reference to other pending applications. It is therefore necessary to have a statement of the age, means of support and expectations of the person whose claims are put forward. If you could secure this information privately (without necessarily reveal— in the object of the enquiry), you may be assured that the matter will receive the Prime Minister’s most sympathetic consideration.

Yours faithfully | [no signature]

The Rev. James Marchant, F.R.A.S, F.R.S.
