J. W. Knapman Esq[uire].
Dear Sir
My friend Sir Thomas Hanbury1 has referred me to Mr Joseph Ince (who wrote a memoir of the late Daniel Hanbury2) for information as to the whereabouts of the letters which his brother possessed from Dr Richard Spruce3, the Botanist, which were very numerous and whose Journals, letters, & notes I am now editing from a work on his 15 years South American Travels. Mr Ince does not know where they are now, and has referred me to you. Will [2] you therefor be so kind as to inform if they are preserved in the Library of which you have the charge, and if so whether you can lend them to me to make copies if such as are of botanical or general interest in relation to Dr. Spruce's Botanical Exploration & Studies.
I may add that I am undertaking this matter rather arduous at the request of Dr. Spruce's Executor, and with the support of Sir Joseph Hooker4, and Sir Clements Markham5.
Believe me | Yours very truly | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]
