Dear Sir

Many interruptions & poor health have prevented me from getting on with the Sprucean1 Travels as I had expected. But having now got as far as the Andes & the time when his correspondence with D. Hanbury2 began, I am going through the letters and extracting such passages, here and there, as seem suitable for [2] my purpose. There are but few as the letters from Peru and Ecuador were mostly on Pharmaceutical & botanical details. The English letters I did not intend to examine. but on reading them so far I find a few lists that I want to copy, & also find so much personal interest in the whole (though very largely those of a confirmed invalid) that I should like to finish reading them. This will [3] not take me very long and I hope to return the whole set to you in a week or so at latest.

Yours very truly | Alfred R. Russel [signature]
