Dr. R. B. Sharpe
My dear Sharpe[,]
A young friend of mine — a very enthusiastic all-round naturalist — is going to apply for the post of Curator of the Museum in the Malay Protectorate, advertised for in ''Nature''. As I dare say, during your long experience at the Museum, you have learnt something about these appointments[.] I shall be much obliged if [2] you can tell me who it is that advises the Colonial Office in such cases, & what kind of testimonials have most weight.
He has had no direct experience in a museum, but I believe, as a collector, observer, & general student of nature, & by possessing some special knowledge & skill, — he will be far better fitted for the post than [3] any one I know.
A few lines will oblige at once, as the testimonials are to be sent in by the end of this month.
Yours very truly, | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]
