My dear Sharpe

Will you oblige me by sending me the short[?] list of the species of birds which you consider to be peculiar to the British Isles — adding the species to which they are most closely allied. I suppose Newton2 admits none but Lagopus scoticus3, but I want to give a list of those which have undergone any insular modification[,] even if doubtfully specific, in a book4 I am now at work on.

Yours very faithfully | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]

Three words written in margin on left: "M2, Th2, M1"
Newton, Alfred (1829-1907). English zoologist and ornithologist.
Lagopus scoticus. The red grouse.
Darwinism: An Exposition of the Theory of Natural Selection, with Some of Its Applications. Book written by Alfred Russel Wallace, published in 1889 by Macmillan. Frequent references in Darwinism to the topics and individuals mentioned in this series of letters between Wallace and Sharpe indicates that Wallace is here referring to Darwinism and not another book.
