Letter (WCP5682.6535)

[1]1

The Dell, Grays, Essex.

March 20th. 1873

Dear Sharpe2

I have written to day to Dr. Gray3 offering the collection.

I have stated the number as "2300 to 2400 specimens of about 1000 species" — and the typical specimens as "about 200 of the new species described to me".

I find the number of absolute types described from my specimens exclusively to be about 150, — and I reckon that of those described by Mr G. R. Gray which are or were in the Museum[,] my specimens (which he had before him) would have been so much better & more complete in at least 50 instances that mine [2] must be considered to be at least joint types.

Stevens4 cannot quite recollect, but he thinks Mr. Gray had my private [1 word illeg.] at the same time with the set taken by the Museum. The point to stand by is however, that he used them in making the descriptions, — that they are in many cases better specimens, — & therefore are joint types.

I let you know exactly what figures[?] I have given in order that you may have a guide [3] in making your official report to the Trustees.

Please thank Dr. Gunther5 for me for his form[?] of letter, which I have followed almost exactly.

Believe me | Yours very faithfully | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]

In the top left of page one of the manuscript, the text "Wallace" has been written, presumably by Richard Bowdler Sharpe.

Gray, George Robert (1808-1872). English zoologist.
Stevens, Samuel (1817-1899). English natural history auctioneer and collection agent for Alfred Russel Wallace.
