Nov[ember]: 18th
Dear Mrs Wallace,
Though I have not the pleasure of knowing you personally you will recognize my name.
I desire for myself and my family to express our very sincere sympathy with you in your great loss — a loss which is felt deeply by the whole of the scientific world.
I and my brothers' [2] very much regret that neither of us was able to show our respects to the memory of Mr Wallace by being present at the funeral.
Unfortunately I did not see the notice of in the newspaper until the day of the funeral.
Believe me to be with respect | Yours very truly | W.E. Darwin [signature]
