Nearly two years ago you very kindly provided a copy of your "Life" to a poor Socialist friend of mine, named "Ellis" of Lower Clapton, who has since died of bronchitis.

It may be of some interest to you to know that the sale of your present to him enabled [2] his widow to buy for a course of massage for a broken hip, and now that it has come into my hands, it is being read with great interest by my son [one word illegible], who I trust will copy your example in one small measure.

I have teachers[?] in a poor council school in the constituency of the "unspeakable Bottomley" and daily dole out such doses of Socialism as I have, to these future citizens. May I say that your books have helped much to broaden my outlook on life, and to increase my sympathies with those herded[?] masses of our big cities.

For all these benefits, anti-vaccination, nationalization of land, as well as great work as a naturalist, I beg[?] to thank you, but shall not trouble you to reply.
