Dear Sir
I am engaged on a bibliography of the pictorial botanical works of the late Walter Hood Fitch, and in this connection, I have find a set of proofs (40) of the lithographs of the late Dr A. R. Wallace's "Palm Trees of the Amazon", can you tell me whether the original drawings are still [2] in existence, and if so where they are preserved? This unpretentious and rare little book appeared in 1853, and , I believe, attracted little attention from Botanists few of whom as that date knew everything of the Palms of the Amazons. But I am told by my friend, Professor J. W. H. Frail of Aberdeen, who has travelled in the same region, and special studied the Palms, that it is excellent, so far as [3] it goes.
I think the book must be very rare because I never see it offered in catalogues of second hand botanical works.
Yours faithfully | W. Botting Hemsley [signature]
