CLARIDGE'S HOTEL,

BROOK STREET, W.1.

March 29, 1926

My dear Mr. Wallace;

Many thanks for your very kind letter of the 28th and I shall see to it that you receive a monograph as soon as the R[oyal]. G[eographical]. S[ociety]. publishes the article on the last exploration.

I am only sorry that you [2] were not in London for the lecture so the survey[?] pictures give a graphic and illuminating impression of the progress up the river and the scenery.

I remember very well the delightful occasion at Broadstone you mention, the kindness and hospitality shown me and to have [3] met and talked with your father was one of the the events of my life.

There is being put up in the little church at Para a bronze tablet memorial to your father, Richard Spruce, Henry Bates, William Chandless and [4] your uncle Herbert Wallace, who died in Para as you know and is buried in the little cemetery that surrounds the church. I have made a prolonged search to ascertain the exact date of his birth but up to now have failed[.] Do you know it? There is a space on the tablet for its insertion.

In Manáos after considerable [5] investigation the old house of Henrique Antony, where you father and Richard Spruce resided and were entertained, has been located and this edifice is to be suitably marked.

The house has come into the possession of two Englishmen, who are really interested [6] and have promised cooperation. I mention these things as it will interest you to know how strong and enduring is the memory and how revered

and respected is the name of your illustrious father in Amazonna [sic] by British and Brazilians alike.

With best wishes, | very sincerely y[ou]rs, | Hamilton Rice [signature]
