Dear Dr. Wallace,

I was beginning to write to you yesterday, when some new possible sources of illustrations occurred to me, and I wanted to have still another search.

First I must apologize for having given you the trouble of re-writing your list. It turned out that the gentleman who had applied to the assist. Librn. [Assistant Librarian] for information, had picked up the list accidentally & put it [2] away with his papers.

[calculations in pencil by unknown hand on the top of the page] 46 x 10 – 460 x 16 page [x] 8 [=] 3680 [x] 2 [=] 7360

I have still met with only partial success in the search. Humboldt’s Atlas does not contain so many views of Sth. America as might have been expected, but it has engravings of Chimborazo & Pichincha (as also of Cotopaxi, [illeg.] & Corazon) but not of the other three you mention, unless his names are synonyms for any of them. He does not figure any of the other places, the two water falls illustrated being both in Columbia.

Of recent travellers in Ecuador, the best is Dr. Hans Meyer,1 who lately brought out a fine book on his researches, which were mainly concerned with the snow [3] and glacial features. He has also brought out a ‘Bilder atlas’2 but this we have not yet obtained. I am sending you his book for you to see what sort of illustrations he gives. On plate 7 (p. 80) he gives a reproduction of Humboldt’s ‘Chimborazo’ though it does not exactly agree with that in an copy of the ‘Vues des Cord.’ [Vues des Cordillères] Stübel made many drawings etc. and we should have a small collection of them, but this is, I am sorry to say, not to be found in its proper place. Wolf’s book on Ecuador has views of some of the places you want some of them from drawings by Stübel, and perhaps I had better send this too. It is just possible that Edward Whymper3 (St. Martin’s House, 29 Ladygate Hill, E.C.) might have photos from which the woodcut in his book would probably be made. If you should think it worth while communicating with Dr. Hans Meyer his address is 20 Haydnstrasse, Leipzig. Dr. Keltie4 suggests that it might be well to [4] apply to the Chargé d'affaires for Ecuador in London, Sr (Senôr) Celso Nevares,5 120 Bishopsgate St. W [within] E.C.

In the Orinoco, there are some news of the cataracts in Chaffanjon’s6 little book (which I send), but those are no doubt rather imaginative, though possibly they would do for want of anything better. For the Rio Negro, the most likely man is Dr. Koch-Grünberg7 (3 Hohenzollernplatz, Nikolassee bei Berlin) who took many photos. during his journey, though those he has published so far are rather of Ethnological than geographical interest. In a series of papers in Globus (1906) he gives one of two views in the neighbourhood of S. Gabriel, but not the cataracts; and he does not show any of those of the Uaupes, though there are one or two views of the Isana and its trib. [tributaries] The Aiari.

As regards Peru, a traveller who has been over a great part of the country and has lately brought into an illustrated book called ‘The Andes & the Amazon’ is Mr. C. R. Enock8 (Newton Abbott Devon). I cannot make and however that he has been at or near Tarapoto. The same is the care as regards Mr. A. Petrocokino9(Thames Cottage Pangbourne Berks), who brought [end of manuscript]

. Meyer, Hans (1858-1929). First climber of Mount Kilimanjaro in 1889. In 1903, Meyer traveled to Ecuador together with the painter Rudolf Reschreiter to explore the glaciated volcanoes in the high Andes. More than 700 photographs can be found in the image collection, most of them were taken by Meyer himself.
