Dear Mr Wallace,
Will you accept a copy of this little popular book which is just published. There seems to me to be a danger that the workers in science of the present generation are forgetting "the hole of the pit whence they were digged" by Darwin and yourself. As one who was a student before The Origin of Species was published I can hear testimony to the real state of opinion at the time. I know you are in agreement [2] with the concerning my estimate of Lyell's work as well as Darwin's. It was in the hope of doing a little to diffuse correct notions on the subject that I consented to prepare this cheap little book for the Cambridge Press.
With every good wish for your health & happiness. | Believe me to remain, | Yours very faithfully | John W. Judd [signature]
