WYKEHAM HOUSE.

OXFORD POST & TELEGR[APH].

14 Sept[ember]. 1937.

Dear Mr Wallace2,

I am sending a copy of the address I gave on Sept[ember]. 13 — of course I did not read the whole or nearly the whole, but it occupied 50 minutes which was quite long enough. It is I understand coming out as one of the Forum booklets. We had a delightful meeting: — perfect weather and splendid arrangements. It was a great joy to have our son4 as President of a Section — Physiology. I believe that this was a record & probably another was having 11 out of our 13 grand- [2] — children present — the youngest being thirteen, but she & all the others enjoyed it immensely. In March last we became great grandparents when a son appeared who has flourished exceeding ever since.

With kindest remembrances & hoping that you and yours5 are well,

Yours very sincerely, | E. B. Poulton6 [signature]

Written sources that give the year of presidency as a single year generally mean the year in which the presidential address is given. The 107th Annual Meeting took place in Nottingham from September 1-8 1937.
Poulton, Edward Palmer (1883-1939) Son of Edward Bagnall Poulton (see Endnote 5). Working at Guy’s Hospital, London from 1912, his research in Physiology in relation to Medicine included diabetes, oxygen therapy, pernicious anaemia and visceral sensations.
Wallace, Elizabeth Carr (née Whittle) (1888-1976) wife; Wallace, Alfred John Russel (1922- ), and Wallace, Richard Russel (1924-), sons of recipient.
Poulton, Edward Bagnall (1856-1943) British evolutionary biologist, friend of ARW and lifelong advocate of natural selection. He became Hope Professor of Zoology at the University of Oxford in 1893.
