Geehrter Herr!

Translation:

Dear Sir

I have received your letter of the 22nd December, but I very [much] regret that I cannot fulfil your wish. I possess no letter from him and also unfortunately have no memories of communicating with his person, as I have never seen him. I was to meet [together] with him two or three times in London, but each time I had to leave earlier, and so it happened, that in spite of my active wish to get to know him personally, still never did so.

Your very devoted | August Weismann
