My dear Professor meldola,

I am now able to send you the particulars you need for the application. Their income is now as follows:,

From the Public Trustee, who is the sole executor of Dr. Wallace's estate, and who has made and controls all the investments which are in Colonial stock, they receive £37 a year. From the rent of Parkstone House £49 net. This house falls empty next year; the lease of present tenant expires and as he has joined the army and has been sent to India it is very unlikely he will renew the lease[.] This source of income is therefore uncertain and might cease for some time if the house remains empty. They have had nothing from the sale of Dr. Wallace's books this year, But they might get say £10. Old Orchard is empty and the delapidations increase. but of above they have to maintain the property and pay their way in every direction. As regards immediate expenses I think they will be able to meet them unless the death duties etc. are heavy. Of this they know nothing at present. But they have £100 in the P.O. savings bank from the sale of the library which was put by for immergencies [sic] and they hope it will meet funeral expenses, clearing up the nurse, and legal claims. As you are aware the income they had whilst their mother was alive was overspent owing to the expenses of special nurse, doctors etc. Mrs. Wallace was quite helpless and required a nurse night and day. As regards Willie. He is most anxious to do work but his physical condition makes it impossible to find him suitable employment. During the last seven years he has had three periods of Sanatorium treatment which I think speaks for itself. He is no doubt very vulnerable, and unless he exercises great care might break up without much warning. I fear the 'cure' is not very deep. If the Prime Minister can see his way to giving them a pension [2] in their joint lives it would be an act of real charity.

I shall be anxious to hear the result.

Very kind regards | Sincerely Yours | (signed) J.Marchant.
