Rt. Hon. Sir
I much regret to inform you that Mrs Wallace passed away suddenly on Friday last. I think you have before you an application to increase (or in some other way to help) the allowance you so generously caused to be made to Mrs Wallace. No doubt you will have to consider the whole matter now, &, if you will allow me, I will put the position of affairs before you. The son (who is unfitted for work owing to consumption which has been partially cured but has left him damaged & incapable of following his engineering) & daughter will need aid. And there will be further death claims & duties.
I am sure you will consider these children of a great father who earned so little & deserved so much.
Yours truly | James Marchant [signature]
