Dear Sirs,

I have received a request from a Mr. S. H. Evans3 for permission to use extracts amounting to 1500 words from my father’s "The Malay Archipelago"4 and including four of the illustrations, in a Colonial Anthology5 which he is compiling.

I think of complying with this request but I am not sure what the position is with regard to the illustrations. I presume the actual blocks are your property. I should be greatly obliged if you would advise me what would be a reasonable charge for the use of these extracts & illustrations in addition to a voucher copy of the work.

While I am writing on this subject could you tell me whether the anthology of Wild Animal Stories edited by Mr. J. T. Sanderson has yet been published by Mess[ieu]rs. Knopf of New York6 or by Mess[ieu]rs. Harrap7 for the British Empire Edition?
