Dear Sir,
I am compiling, in collaboration, an Anthology consisting of quotations from well-known writers of all ages, — statesmen, scientists, theologians, poets, etc. — dealing with the subject of war3. I am very desirous of including certain quotations from the works of your father, the late D[octo]r. Alfred Russel Wallace, as noted overleaf, of which I understand you hold the copyright, and I shall be much obliged if you will kindly give me permission so to do. There will be a full list of acknowledgements at the beginning of the volume, and a complete reference will be given to every quotation. With regard to the passages from "My Life"4, the publishers, Mess[ieu]rs. Chapman & Hall L[imi]t[e]d. are agreeable to my using this if you also will give your consent; and with reference to the passages from "Studies Scientific and Social"5 I have just written to the publishers Mess[ieu]rs. Macmillan & Co[mpany]. L[imi]t[e]d., and, no doubt, shall receive an affirmative reply, as in the case of one or two other books they publish from which I wish to quote.
Thanking you in anticipation, | Yours faithfully, | H. Stanley Redgrove6 [signature]
