March 25th. 1863

My dear Sir

I have this day sent off to you a collection of Lepidoptera1 in exchange for the very fine series of European Butterflies you have sent me.2 I have not yet had time to take out the specimens but there seems to be a very small number of them injured or broken. On the other page I have sent some notes of the species now forwarded. I am sorry that the specimens are not in better condition but I trust the rarity of many of them will counterbalance their defects. I should have sent a smaller number of better specimens had you not assured me that imperfect examples would be acceptable.

Among them you will find many that were in your list of desiderata & also others of not yet described. The papilios I intend shortly to publish a list of myself describing the new species as I have a very fine series from many localities. If you think any of the specimens sent are not correctly named I would be much obliged by your letting me know your opinion. In the other families some I have not named because you will recognise them immediately from Mr Hewitson's3 figures, & others are not yet described or I have not yet had time to make out the descriptions. Any specimens you wish to mention, quote the ticket of Locality & I shall be generally able to tell which it is you mean. Some of the tickets which have not been changed have abbreviations, generally the three first letters of the name as: Sar. = Sarawak, Mal = Malacca, Sum. = Sumatra, Cer. = Ceram[,] Sing. = Singapore, Dor. = Dorey (N. Guinea)[,] Mak. = Makassar. &c. &c.4

If you consider the collection a full equivalent for those you sent me I shall hope that you will obtain for me the few European species wanting in that collection. After [2] finally arranging my collection I shall probably have a few more duplicates, & I am still occasionally receiving collections from the East, — so that I shall be able to send you a few more acceptable species.

In exchange for the 100 specimens of Austrian birds I send as agreed 50 Malayan bird skins + 11 for the 11 N. Zealand specimens, and further 74 skins in exchange for the remainder of the Austrian birds which you have promised to procure for me. In all 135 specimens of about 120 species, all with names & localities. As I do not wish any further examples of the species of birds already sent, if you have not a list of them I will send one.

I send also by "book post" two papers of mine which may perhaps interest you, — also some bird lists of Mr. S. Stevens5, which he requests you will hand to any of the chief ornithologists in Vienna.

In case of sending any boxes again to England can they not be sent by way of Trieste very much cheaper. The charges on the box you sent were £3.— much more than on one of the same size from the remotest parts of the East.

Trusting that this collection may reach you in good condition & give satisfaction

I remain | My dear Sir | Yours very sincerely | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]

See WCP649.821, ARW to Felder, 25 March 1863, to which this is an addendum rather than a separate enclosure, as it is written on the same paper at the end of the letter. The list is set out in two columns, the left naming genera of the butterfly family Papilionidae and the numbers of specimens of each; ("Ornithoptera croesus. W. ♂. ♀. 3 | Or.4.. sp. (? archideus) 3" and so on). Other butterfly families, beginning with Pieridae, and details of specimens sent, are on the right, each family divided from the next by an underline in ink. Specimen totals of Rhopalocera, Heterocera and Hesperiidae (see notes 7 to 9) are at the bottom of the page.
A family of butterflies including the genera Ornithoptera (commonly Birdwing butterfly), Papilio (Swallowtail) and Leptocircus (Dragontail). Many of the species are included in Wallace, A. R. 1865. On the Phenomena of Variation and Geographical Distribution as Illustrated by the Papilionidae of the Malayan Region. The Transactions of the Linnean Society of London. 25 (I)
Butterfly commonly named Wallace's Golden Birdwing.
The abbreviation "P." is used throughout for the genus Papilio. See note 2.
