I should have written you long before this but I have been waiting in Vain for Mr A McNaughton of Edinburgh to pay me the am[oun]t you spoke of, £32 I have written to him now 5 or 6 times altogether, latterly he has not replied to my letters & I am getting out of patience [.]1 The am[oun]t you owe me is[?] £32 19/7 [2] and as I cannot get it from him will thank you to send the am[oun]t direct or by the care of Mr Hewitson2 or Prof. Westwood3 whom I presume are now at Vienna as they told me they expected to see you about this time, Mr Bates4 has selected for you a few Madagascan Butterflies from a Collection I received the am[ou]nt of them is £4.18 [.]
Shall I send you these Butterflies or wait 'till I get something more? —

Since writing the foregoing I have seen Mr Bates & he last week sent off the Butterflies & Moths from Madagascar with his & I also at the same time took the opportunity of sending you a few of Mr Wallace's duplicates from Sumatra comprising

Some of these would have been higher in price if they had been perfect[,] a few I regret are not but they are the best I have — [.]
I have not been able to look [4] out any Orthoptera to send to Bern [to] Brunner5 on sale or return for of late I have been so very much engaged [.]
Mr Hewitson returned Safe last Thursday with Prof. Westwood & much pleased with their trip he called yesterday to see what new Butterflies I had for him & I regret to say none pas[?] none, had come in in his absence [.]
