Dear Mr Marchant

My son had just left for New London on his way to Newcastle tomorrow, when your letter arrived. If Mr Collier fails, there is Mr. William Strang A.R.A. who did many of the series of Crayon portraits of the O.M.'s <in> the Kings Collection at Windsor and has a wonderful power of getting a good likeness in an [2] hour or two — the result of natural faculty combined with many years continued study. He also paints, and got the 1st.class Gold Medal for painting at the Dresden International Exhibition 1897. I should think he would not charge more for a portrait in oil than Collier, & I feel sure he would do it in 2 or 3 short sittings. His drawing of me was an admirable likeness. It can be seen by appointment at Windsor.

His address is 7, Hamilton [3] Terrace, N.W. — Telephone. 4946 Paddington. You probably know some artists who can give you information as to Mr Strand, but the one fact that he had one of the Commissions for the King's private collection of O.M.s portraits proves that he is a recognised artists of the first rank.

I hope the matter will be settled soon as my health is uncertain, & I feel that I may break down at any time.

Yours very truly | Alfred R. Wallace [signature]

P.S. I see that Cassell are advertising the "Revolt of Democracy" without giving any date of publication, or even saying whether it is published or not. As soon as it is please send me my allowance of "Author's Copies".
