Old Orchard,

Broadstone,

Dorset.

Dear Mrs Rayner

I send you a small plant of Eucalyptus Gunnii a seedling of the tree you saw at Parkstone, I raised several hundreds of them about 3 years ago. This is one of them that was left in the seedbox not transplanted until this year, hence its dwarf size

The seed pods are seeds of Swainsonia1 <Atropubens?>. Here it is quite hardy & always in flower. It will require to be raised in a pot in a greenhouse if you have one.2

[2] [3] [4] built & we were so surrounded by houses that we wished to go further into the country & finding nothing to suit us we came here & have got all we want, although only 4 miles from Parkstone.

If you ever come this way we should be pleased to see you, Miss Beale came over a few weeks ago looking better than I have seen her for some time, I believe she is now at Wilton with friends, she has a small house now, & misses the lovely [5] views she had at St Martin's where you stayed, she now looks over a meadow by the side of Mrs Hamiltons home, & although quite close to her former home she has no view, on account of the trees which shut it out. The soil in our new garden is loamy & suitable for fruit trees & roses. I am trying to get a collection of Roses I find ferns which grew so [6] well at Parkstone die here on account of the wind. Our house & garden here are the opposite in every way from the one you saw us in at Parkstone, we are on the slope of a hill & exposed to every wind, & are much better in health in consequence. We have a lot of Acacias coming out in bloom, some generally grown in Greenhouses they have not as yet been killed by frosts & I hope they will escape.

With kind regards | Believe me | Yours truly | A Wallace [signature]

Apparently an error, for Swainsonia has been a Sea Snail genus since 1791.
